The D merupakan duo comedy rock yang beranggotakan sang aktor terkenal Hollywood "
Jack Black" dan
Kyle Gass, terbentuk pada tahun 1994 dan berasal dari Los Angeles, California, Amerika Serikat. Gaya musik mereka memadukan lawakan, musik rock dan terdapat sebuah pembicaraan antar personel di lagu-lagunya. Jack Black bernyanyi dan Kyle Gass bermain gitar akustik. Tenacious D mulai populer pada tahun 1999 ketika mereka membuat film seri Tenacious D di HBO, dimana Jack dan Kyle menyebut diri mereka sebagai "the Greatest Band on Earth". Pada November 2006 mereka menerbitkan film TENACIOUS D in: The Pick of Destiny. Tenacious D juga mempunyai personel tambahkan ketika melakukan tur konser, diantaranya adalah drummer
Dave Grohl, gitaris John Konesky, bassist John Spiker, percussion Scott Seiver dan mantan personel tambahan mereka adalah drummer Brooks Wackerman. Sejauh ini, The D telah sukses merilis empat buah album studio.

Awal mula: Jack Black & Kyle Gass bertemu adalah saat berusia 16 dan 24 tahun di Edinburgh, Skotlandia, dalam Edinburgh Fringe. Saat itu keduanya merupakan anggota kelompok teater Los Angeles, The Actors' Gang. Mereka berdua membentuk band dan mengambil namanya dari komentator Marv Albert mengenai "tenacious defense" dari New York Knicks. Nama ini di pilih oleh penonton dalam konser pertama mereka pada 1994. Nama lainnya yang diusulkan adalah "Pets or Meat", "Balboa’s Biblical Theatre", dan "The Axe Lords Featuring Gorgazon’s Mischief". David Cross menonton pertunjukan mereka berdua, dan ia langsung mengundang Tenacious D ke dalam film serinya berjudul Mr. Show.
