Helloween adalah band power metal terpopuler di dunia yang didirikan pada tahun 1984 di Hamburg, Jerman Barat oleh anggota band Iron Fist dan Gentry. Formasi yang pertama terdiri dari penyanyi dan gitaris Kai Hansen, bassist Markus Grosskopf, gitaris Michael Weikath, dan drummer ingo Schwichtenberg. Setelah pelepasan EP yang bertajuk dan album debut mereka Walls of Jericho pada tahun 1985, diperluas dengan penambahan penyanyi Michael Kiske, Hansen memilih untuk fokus pada gitar sebagai gantinya. Di bawah line-up ini, mereka merilis album Keeper of the Seven Keys, yang mendirikan Helloween sebagai band heavy metal yang terkenal dan menyebabkan penciptaan subgenre power metal. Hansen meninggalkan band segera setelah pelepasan Bagian II dan digantikan oleh Roland Grapow. Setelah meninggalkan Helloween, Hansen terbentuk Gamma Ray.

Dua album pertama Helloween tanpa hansen, Pink Bubbles Go Ape (1991) dan Chameleon (1993), adalah kegagalan komersial dan kritis, yang menciptakan ketegangan antara anggota band dan menyebabkan penembakan Schwichtenberg dan Kiske. Mereka digantikan oleh Uli Kusch dan Andi Deris masing-masing.
