Foo Fighters merupakan band rock alternatif, terbentuk pada tahun 1994 dan berasal dari Seattle, Washington, Amerika Serikat. Band ini didirikan oleh drummer "Dave Grohl" setelah Nirvana bubar karena kematian sang vokalisnya "Kurt Cobain". Nama grup musik ini terinspirasi dari objek-objek terbang misterius atau UFO yang sering terlihat oleh para pilot pesawat sekutu di Perang Dunia II, yang dikenal secara kolektif sebagai Foo Fighter. Di band rock ini Grohl sendiri bermain sebagai gitaris dan vokalis. Selama perjalanan karier grup ini, empat dari album nya telah memenangkan 11 Grammy Awards diantaranya memenangkan Best Rock Album empat kali, juga penghargaan bergengsi lainnya seperti: Best Rock Performance, Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance, Best Long Form Music Video (untuk Back and Forth) dan Album of the Year.

Gaya Musik: Ketika pertama kali Grohl mulai bermain dengan Foo Fighter ini, lagunya sering dibandingkan dengan band lama sebelumnya yaitu Nirvana. Grohl mengakui bahwa Nirvana terutama penyanyi / gitaris Kurt Cobain adalah pengaruh yang besar pada penulisan lagu. Grohl mengucapkan bahwa "Melalui Kurt Cobain, aku melihat keindahan minimalisme dan pentingnya musik yang dipreteli. Foo Fighters juga memanfaatkan teknik pergeseran antara verse tenang dan chorus keras, dan juga Grohl pernah mengatakan dia terpengaruh oleh anggota Nirvana yang menyukai Knack, Bay City Rollers, The Beatles, ABBA dan sebanyak yang kita suka Flipper dan Black Flag, saya kira merekam dan menulis lirik lagu untuk album awal Foo Fighters semuanya dilakukan oleh dirinya sendiri, Grohl menulis riff gitar menjadi seperti berirama. Ia mendekati kepekaan terhadap gitarnya dengan cara yang mirip seperti bermain sebuah drumkit, menetapkan bagian drum yang berbeda untuk string yang berbeda pada instrumen. Hal ini memungkinkan dia untuk mengumpulkan lagu dengan mudah, ia berkata, "Aku bisa mendengar musik di kepalaku sebelum semuanya selesai." Sejarah: Sebelum dirilisnya album pertama Foo Fighters pada tahun 1995, hanya Dave Grohl saja seorang anggota resmi, Grohl lalu mengumpulkan para anggota personilnya seperti pemain bass Nate Mendel dan penabuh drum William Goldsmith mantan drummer Suny Day Real Estate, serta gitaris tur Nirvana yaitu Pat Smear sebagai gitaris, untuk menyelesaikan penggarapan album ini. Memulai pertunjukan pertama di Portland, Oregon sebelum mendapatkan popularitas, Single pertama band baru itu adalah This Is a Call . Single itu cukup mencuri perhatian publik, sebelum dirilisnya album bertajuk Foo Fighters yang mencuatkan tembang "I’ll Stick Around", "For All The Cows" dan "Big Me" . Dalam debut album Foo Fighters, seluruh sound dalam lagu-lagu seperti "This Is A Call" dan "I"ll Stick Around" memiliki aroma Nirvana. Tapi dalam abum The Colour & The Shape, upaya untuk menghasilkan sound ala Foo Fighters semakin kentara.
Pada tahun 1997, Goldsmith mengundurkan diri sebelum rekaman album kedua The Colour and the Shape, sehingga Grohl memainkan sendiri bagian drum saat melakukan rekaman "hampir semua lagu direkam oleh Grohl sendiri". Album ini juga dikenang para penggemar musik dengan sentuhan drum paling bertenaga, khas pria kelahiran Warren, Ohio itu. Kesulitan mencari penggebuk drum akhirnya teratasi dengan merekrut pemain drum band Alanis Morissette yaitu Taylor Hawkins. Baru saja napas Dave bisa tenang, giliran gitaris Pat Smear yang undur diri pada saat ajang MTV Video Music Awards. Dan akhirnya mantan rekan Dave Grohl di band Hardcore "Scream" Franz Stahl lalu mengisi posisi kosong itu .

Rangkaian personel di album The Colour and the Shape hanya bertahan sampai album rekaman ketiga , There Is Nothing Left to Lose (1999) Franz Stahl mengundurkan diri. Setelah melakukan audisi kepada 35 gitaris, Lalu posisi kosong itu ditempati Chris Shiflett yang bergabung sebagai gitaris band setelah selesainya album sampai There Is Nothing Left to Lose (1999) dan bertahan hingga sampai saat ini. Grohl, Mendel, dan Hawkins menghabiskan beberapa bulan untuk merekam album ketiga band ini, penggarapan album ini dilakukan di Virginia rumah studio Grohl yang ia beli dan dibangunnya. Album ini menelurkan beberapa single, termasuk "Learn to Fly" ini single band pertama yang mencapai US Billboard Hot 100.
